Being “Christian”

Proverbs 22:4 NKJV

By humility and the fear of the Lord Are riches and honor and life.

As a believer, one of the most difficult things for me to wrap my head around is the true enormity of God. I am not suggesting that I ever will. On this side of heaven it is impossible to completely know God; to know Him completely would require being in His presence in a way that is not possible for human kind.  Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth (KJV).  God was here before everything else, He created everything else. When we sit back and take in the first verse of the bible, the true size and scope of God becomes apparent and with it, its shear unfathomability by human standards. The Hebrew word for God used in this passage is Elohim. According to a word study, Elohim, had both singular and plural tenses. It usually takes the singular verb tense however. This is so there can be no question as to the singularity of God in His divinity. It is no wonder humans have difficulty with the enormity of God. The perspective is stark. If God is so immense, if God is the alpha (the beginning) and the omega (the end) then what use does God have for us? It is an honest question and one that we should not shy away from.

Christians often get caught up in being christian. Before we leave the house for church  we run down the list: bible, check; devo book, check; notepad, check.  Once we have completed the outward check the inward check starts. This usually involves those things that are unspeakable; the private things that are to none of anyones business. Things such as marital problems, impure thoughts, anger, fear, weakness, and addiction are too personal to let anyone see. So, off we go to church with our list of acceptable topics at the ready: concerns about the world at large, our neighbor falling away from the faith, and our second cousin twice removed who is having hip surgery next week are on the prayer list and ready to be tackled. whether this is done consciously or subconsciously it is done by us all at one point or another and no matter the reason; it is dangerous. While we are busy playing a role, while we are busy putting on a good face convincing everyone that we are the example of perfect christian living, we are in fact doing damage to ourselves spiritually. By not being honest with others we will soon cease being honest with ourselves. Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels put it this way, “If you tell a lie long enough it becomes truth.” The spiritual danger comes when we begin to believe our own press. when this happens we can become pompous and arrogant. In the worst of circumstances, as we stop depending on God for our deliverance and start depending on ourselves. We neglect our relationship with Him all together. We stop doing our devos. Then we don’t have time for prayer, then we stop talking about the things of God, and finally we stop associating with christians completely. We stop going to church.

There is good news. The God of the universe, the beginning and the end loves us and wants to have a deep and abiding relationship with us. That relationship starts with humility; the understanding that God started it, He will finish it- He is in charge. To be clear, religion can not save us. going to church does not save us, knowing all the words to the songs does not save us, not even being a bible student does not  save us. The only thing that saves us is faith in Jesus Christ. Knowing that the God of the universe sent His Son to die for us. Roman 5:8 But God Demonstrated His own love for us, in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.

Jesus wants to know you and if you have fallen away He wants you to come back to Him. He is waiting for you. open the door of your heart and let Him in. Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock if anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come in and dine with him and he with Me.

Grace & Peace,

LD
